Lehigh Wrestling 1990-2014: Rebuilding and Triumphs

Sunday, April 25, 2010

The early nineties and the departure of coach Thad Turner brought difficult times for the team, but these woes would not last long. In 1995, Lehigh hired Greg Strobel as the new head coach who would lead the team through many of its best seasons to date. Strobel holds the highest winning percentage in EIWA history, winning six team titles in his thirteen seasons (Thad Turner is in second place, winning 8 of 18). He led the team to several high team finishes at NCAAs, including a third place finish in 2004 and coached two national champions, Rob Rohn in 2002 and Troy Leters in 2004.

In 2008, Pat Santoro a two-time national champion for Pitt, took over as head coach. Santoro has already made an impressive impact in his first few years. In the 2008-2009 season, he led the team to a 23-1 dual record and a runner-up finish at EIWAs. In six years at Lehigh, he has coached twelve All Americans, eleven EIWA champions, had athletes make five appearances in NCAA finals, and had one champion in heavyweight Zach Rey.

In 2013 Lehigh unveiled its $4.1 million Caruso Complex. It is a state of the art wrestling facility above the Leeman-Turner Arena in Grace Hall. Wrestling has brought much pride and excitement to Lehigh over its history, and continues to do so today.
