In November 1875, a man named Bartolo Longo bought a painting of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child presenting rosaries to Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena to place in the chapel he was building in Pompeii, Italy. Almost immediately, people began to report miracles and pilgrims flocked to the chapel. Pope John Paul II beatified Bartolo Longo in October 1980. The painting, “Our Lady of the Rosary,” is also referred to as “Our Lady of Pompeii,” because of its placement in the cathedral of Pompeii. This is from where Our Lady of Pompeii of the Most Holy Rosary Church gets its name. A copy of the painting adorned the altar at Our Lady of Pompeii and is now located at Holy Ghost Church in Bethlehem, PA.
