Lehigh accused of purposefully fostering blight to get urban renewal funds

Wednesday, August 2, 2017

This Nov. 20,1964 article from Lehigh's Brown and White newspaper discusses the conflict between residents of the Packer Ave area who opposed demolition, and the university, which refused to repair blighted properties --the first homes they had acquired for campus expansionand, and had either rented out to students, or had simply boarded up. Residents claimed that the university had deliberately allowed their properties to run down in order to acquire the federal urban renewal funding (which require a "blighted" neighborhood designation before monies could be appropriated for a project).
